ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) announced Monday its first positive COVID-19 test results for an inmate at one of state’s 11 prison facilities.
According to NMCD, the first positive inmate is a 31-year-old man who is housed at the state contracted Otero County Prison Facility, operated by Management and Training Corporation.
NMCD report that the man was placed into medical separation after reporting feeling ill on Friday. He was eventually transported to University Hospital in El Paso, Texas.
Following receipt of his positive result, 133 other inmates, who may have had contact or were in a shared space with the positive individual, were tested.
The results that were in as of Monday show 20 inmates testing positive for COVID-19. The remaining 112 tests were, and one test is still pending, according to NMCD.
The state reports that all COVID-19 positive inmates have been separated from the general population and are under medical observation.
The Department of Health is reportedly working with NMCD to test the entire population of state inmates at the Otero County Prison Facility.
