ROSWELL, N.M.- The Roswell Air Center was packed with thousands of students from across New Mexico for the annual Aviation and Aerospace STEM Expo Thursday.

The goal was for students to learn about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and the careers that come with it.

This year’s theme was  “Women in Aviation and Science.”

"There's a chronic need for skilled committed people in aviation,” Roswell’s mayor, Dennis Kintigh said. “Everything from mechanics to air traffic controllers to pilots and everything in between."

Some students said they were unsure what to think at first.

“I was like… uh, I’m not really interested,” said Goddard High student, Ericca Cannon.

“When I came, I wasn’t really excited,” said Roswell High student, Nakia Fletcher.

However, Fletcher and Cannon had a change of heart when they were given the opportunity to get hands-on training from pilots, engineers and educators from all over the world.

"I saw all the planes and all the people,” Cannon said. “I was like—wow, this seems like something really great, you know?"

"I actually want to do it,” Fletcher said. “I want to take some college classes about it."

Holloman’s Aero Club pilot and instructor, John Jones said their goal is to help inspire the next generation of pilots.

"Aviation is something that I'm passionate about, and the world needs more aviators,” he said.
