ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexicans are reveling over the supermoon that hovered over the Land of Enchantment on New Year’s, sending in pictures to prove just how magnificent it really was.

The name “supermoon” was actually created by an astrologer in 1979, but astronomers would call this type of moon a ‘perigean’.  A perigean full moon is a full moon occurring near or at the time when the Moon is at its closest point in its orbit around Earth.

The best news is, this isn’t the only supermoon New Mexicans will see in 2018. In just a few short weeks, make sure to catch the next supermoon set to take to the skies January 31st.

NASA says it will feature a total lunar eclipse and people in western North America across the pacific to Eastern Asia will be able to see it.
