CARLSBAD, N.M. – An 18-year-old has been arrested in the southeast New Mexico city of Carlsbad for allegedly shooting an 8-year-old boy in the chest sometime Thursday afternoon.

That boy has been taken to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, and is in stable condition as of Friday morning.

An ensuing investigation by Carlsbad Police found the shooting occurred in the west part of the city on the 100 block of Third Street. Keyon Mason, the boyfriend of the victim's sister, told police he recently bought the revolver and admitted to intentionally aiming it at the victim "knowing it was loaded and pulled the trigger" while playing with it, according to court documents.

Mason told police he allegedly thought safety was on at the time but that he "probably bumped the safety off" with handling the revolver.

A local mother said the incident easily couldn've been avoided.

"It's just all about common sense. He should know not to do something like that," Sarah Kuhn said. "He's old enough that he should know. It's just not...it's just not something that should have happened."

Kuhn said she owns guns but makes sure to keep them locked away and out of the hands of her two children. She said it's important to educate children on gun safety, but it's even more important for adults to know not to play with weapons around children.

After searching Mason's travel trailer, Carlsbad Police officers found the hidden revolver and spent casings, as well as an apparent bullet hole in one of the trailer's walls.

Mason was arrested and is charged with abandonment or abuse of a child and tampering with evidence, police say. He also faces six warrants not connected to the shooting.
