TAOS, N.M. - Exciting news for skiers and snowboarders out of the Village of Taos today: Taos Air will be offering flights to and from two big cities in Texas starting in December.
“It’s going to be great! We’ve needed it and we haven’t had any air service for a long time,” said Barbara Cottam, who owns Cottam’s Ski Shop in Taos.
The flights will be offered for Dallas-Love Field and Austin International Airports in time for tourists to take advantage of the ski season. The charter flight service will start December 20 and be offered through March of 2019.
“80-percent of our budget in the Town of Taos is based off of gross receipts tax,” said Mayor Dan Barrone. “40-percent of it is based off of tourism of that 80-percent. So if we can enhance that revenue source we can see better roads. We can see better opportunities for our youth in our community, better opportunities for better infrastructure, better youth and family centers.”
Taos ski valley incorporated purchased a 30-passenger jet that will make six trips per week into Taos Regional Airport from Dallas and Austin. The round trip cost of the charter flights is around $400, similar to what you’d pay for a commercial flight.
“This will be very convenient when you land at the airport,” said David Norden, CEO of Taos Ski Valley. “The stairway will go down. We will have a shuttle vehicle waiting for you. We call it ‘landing to lodge,’ so you get off the airplane, will pick you up and run you right to Taos Ski Valley”
Flights will run from each destination every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday or holiday Monday.
