LAMY, N.M. -- Looking for a unique weekend getaway with the family? Try spending the night in a tepee near Santa Fe.
The Tipis of Santa Fe is nestled in the rolling hills southeast of Santa Fe in Lamy. Those looking for a one-of-a-kind outdoors experience can stay in one of five tepees up for rent on Airbnb. Each one has three beds.
"It really gives a feel like you're time traveling," said Matthew Andrae.
Andrae started renting the tepees in February on 10 acres of land. He's been booked up ever since, hosting guests from as far away as Italy and France.
"I have people who tell me their lives have been changed by being under the stars, in the wind, in five-degree weather," Andrae said. "And I'm not sure if that's for the better or the worse."
There's no electricity, Wi-Fi or running water, forcing guests to get back in touch with nature. Andrae, who's half Native American, hopes it also gives visitors an appreciation for Native American culture.
"The tepee itself has a certain magic to it," he said. "I think when you see them at night and the smoke coming out of the top, you suddenly realize wow, this is what people were doing. And it's an intense realization. So I would love to be a magnet for that sort of a vibe."
He's hoping to expand his tepees to two more locations near Santa Fe soon.
"I think I could do this all over the country," he said.
Depending on the season it'll cost between $55 to $100 to rent one of the tepees for a night. For more information visit: http://thetipisofsantafe.com
