SANTA FE, N.M. - The Tesuque Casino opened its doors Friday.
The newest casino in New Mexico opened in the shadow of the Santa Fe Opera House.
Last year, KOB heard concerns from Opera House leaders about the development of the casino. Charles MacKay -- who was general director of the Opera House at the time said, “I think we are concerned. Very much concerned and it’s simply the factor of the unknown.”
However, Tesuque Casino operators told KOB Friday that Opera House leadership has been involved in every stage of planning, leading up to the grand opening of the casino.
“We intend to be very good neighbors with the opera and have a very good relationship,” said John Kubiak, Chairman of the Pueblo of Tesuque Development Corporation – which operates the casino.
Kubiak said the casino structure was intentionally placed far away from the Opera House.
“We have a quarter mile of parking lot between the building and the Opera,” said Kubiak.
Concerns about light pollution were also addressed. Kubiak said developers used lower standards in parking lot lighting.
“They’re all lower and facing down to minimize light pollution,” said Kubiak.
