ROSWELL, N.M. – Thousands of people are expected to show up in early July to embrace all things alien and paranormal as the 2018 UFO Festival kicks off.

Kathy Lay, Executive Director for MainStreet Roswell, said about 38,000 people attended the 70th Anniversary of the UFO Festival last year from all around the world.

"There are (alien) murals all over town. There's alien statues all over town. There are paintings on the windows of aliens and UFO's all over town—we just embrace it," Lay said.

The city is most famous for green creatures who some believed visited 71 years ago after they allegedly crashed at a ranch in Corona, New Mexico. It has become a tourist hot spot every day of the year, but it's expected to have a particularly large influx of visitors on the weekend of July 6.

"You have people all over the city. There will be some out at the mall at Galactic Con. Some will be at the UFO museum doing the seminars and workshops," Lay said. "You'll have some that will be going to the plays that are going on, some will be over at the planetarium, some will be here at this festival. They're all over."

She said one of the main highlights is a new activity where kids and adults alike can take part in a scientific experiment at the Tascosa Office Machines building, located at 321 N Main Street.

"They're going to be doing alien autopsies with a camera and a big-screen TV (and) getting kids to come help, so it's going to be crazy," Lay said.

The six mock alien bodies were created by the New Mexico Museum of Space History. On July 5 the experiments will start every 30 minutes, beginning at noon.

Lay said another new activity for this year's festival will allow attendees the opportunity to step into an authentic NASA spacesuit that's cut in half…and take a selfie.

She said there a lot of different activities that are free. All the information on the activities is on the UFO Festival website.
