The Tour of the Gila will span five days in and around Silver City. As the race's start nears, officials with the New Mexico Department of Transportation are reminding the public to keep an eye out for cyclists in the southwest region of the state.

There will also be road closures to make way for race participants.

Police say that in order to keep everyone safe, they must make sure to allow three feet of passing space on the right side of their vehicles when passing cyclists, and refrain to pass if there is oncoming traffic.
