Police: 2 killed after semi driver failed to stop, rear-ended 5 vehicles

EDDY COUNTY, N.M. - New Mexico State Police are investigating a double fatal crash east of Carlsbad.

It happened Thursday around 10:30 a.m. on U.S. 62/180.

Police say part of the highway was closed in both directions due to power line work in the area but a semi driver failed to stop and rear-ended the stopped traffic, crashing into five vehicles.

60-year-old Maria Marin and 44-year-old Josefina Valles of Hobbs were both killed.

The driver of the semi, two other drivers, and one passenger were all transported to the hospital with injuries.

Police say driver inattention is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash and it does not appear that alcohol was a factor.

Charges for the semi driver are pending the outcome of the investigation.
