ROSWELL, N.M. - Pushing a wheelchair is a struggle Stormie Shultz has been dealing with for six years.

“It’s difficult to push someone up, so I couldn’t imagine trying to wheel myself up or down,” Stormie said.

She posted a video on Facebook showing her pushing her brother Joshua up a long ramp to the entrance of the Chaves County Courthouse.

She said it took a few minutes to get to the door, but the automatic door button didn’t work.

“This is the building that you come to when there are issues like this around the city. This is where you would come, so this is the place that definitely should have access for people that really need a voice,” she said.

Bill Williams, the Public Services Director for Chaves County, said the button was fixed an hour after receiving a call from Stormie. But she wants for her brother to have another option besides the long ramp.

The courthouse has a wheelchair lift outside the building, but Williams said it hasn’t worked in more than eight years.

“The lift is out of service because it’s unsafe. It was installed by a company and they could never get it to work. They made some modifications to it, but it didn’t work,” he said.

The ramp is ADA compliant, but Williams admits it’s a hassle the county is trying to fix. He said they plan on building an elevator near the ramp with funds from the state. He said they’re in the design phase and hope the elevator will be near completion a year from now.

“Planning is nice, but action is better,” Stormie said. “And this has been broken for a long time.”
