The Soldier Canyon Fire has burned about 2,500 acres. It's burning about 1 mile north of the town of Mescalero, New Mexico.

There is a mandatory evacuation order in place for the Blank Canyon and White Mountain subdivisions. Those evacuated can go to the Mescalero Community Center.

U.S. Highway 70 is open. Officials say they will keep the highway open as long as traffic continues to flow and is not impacted by the fire. Officials ask that people do not stop along the highway.
