EDDY COUNTY, N.M.- A young man's wishes to become a deputy came true, just in time for his birthday.

"His mom contacted me and said his 18th birthday is coming up, and he's always dreamed of being a deputy," said Sheriff Mark Cage from Eddy County Sheriff's Department.

On Monday, Roman's dreams turned into reality, as he dressed in full uniform for the day and played the part.

"He was deputized this morning, and received his badge. Then, we took him out, and he did a traffic stop, and actually got to arrest one of my other deputies," Sheriff Cage said.

Roman playfully arrested one of the deputies on duty to get a good feel of what an actual arrest is like. He also took part in other activities throughout the day.

Roman couldn't be happier.

"My 18th birthday felt good, Mark Cage did make me a sheriff," Roman said.

The sheriff said he was happy to make it happen, and to show Roman and others more about his honorable profession.

"We need more good young folks to gravitate toward law enforcement," Sheriff Cage said.
