Farmington Municipal Schools let students choose cafeteria food
FARMINGTON, N.M. – Students in the Farmington Municipal Schools District are getting to choose what’s served in their cafeteria.
“We ask for the opportunity with some of our most favorite menu items for our students to really give us their choice because they are ultimately the ones that are eating, so we want to make sure they’re happy,” said Marie Johnson, a FMS Student Food Nutrition coordinator.
Johnson says they start preparing nearly a year out to give students the say.
“Coordinating with our brokers and different purchasers that we buy products from, we just came together,” said Johnson.
On Tuesday, they set up for students at Heights Middle School will be the judge.
“So we are coming to our students to make the decision for us in which beef patty they want to have on their plates,” Johnson said. “This is something that they get excited about, they like the power of choice.”
The beef patty students select is going to be used for the 2025-2026 school year.
“This is something that they get excited about, they like the power of choice,” said Johnson.
Johnson says this is important because it plays a key role in student lunch participation.
“The fact that they are the ones who made the decisions on what is being served will defiantly encourage them and increase their participation. That’s why we’re here, we want every day that we serve meals for over 60-70% of our population our student body to eat,” said Johnson.
