Teen accused in botched robbery had ankle monitor
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – One of the seven kids accused in a botched robbery turned shootout in Albuquerque last week was under supervised release, on an ankle monitor for a vicious beating two years ago.
Janiyah Pino was sentenced to two years of probation for aggravated assault after a social media video showing another teenager get stripped and beaten in a southeast Albuquerque park in 2023.
“It’s really disheartening to the officers, detectives, everyone who’s seen some of these videos. They were really, you know, very violent. And it’s hard to imagine someone that young going through that kind of trauma,” said Albuquerque Police Department Spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos.
Court records show Pino had not followed her probation rules related to her ankle monitor. She was then sentenced to one year in the state’s Youth Diagnostic Development Center but released after nine months on ankle monitor.
In December 2024, court records show Pino’s ankle monitor tracked her staying out late into the morning hours before she allowed the GPS monitor’s battery to die. After probation officers failed to make contact with her, they issued a warrant for her arrest.
Less than two months later, she was arrested for armed robbery along with her brother, Vicente Pino.
