Week 7 Observations
October 14, 2017 11:03 AM
Well, we know who is the hands-down, no question about it, #1 team in the state don't we? The Manzano Monarchs built up a 21-0 lead and held on to beat #2 La Cueva on Friday night 28-21. Manzano's offensive and defensive front had a lot to do with the outcome. They had their way with the Bears in the first half. It won't be a cake walk for the Monarchs from here on out. They still have district games against Eldorado and Clovis who will present a challenge, especially if quarterback Jordan Byrd misses any time under concussion protocol (Byrd left Friday's game in the third quarter after suffering a hard hit).
The potential postseason matchup I'd be anxious to see: Belen vs Miyamura. Both 5A teams picked up easy wins on Friday to remain undefeated. The Eagles scored on every possesion against Valencia in their 55-0 win.
Bragging rights in Rio Rancho determined by home field: For the last several years, it seems like the visiting team in the Rio Rancho-Cleveland series seems to have the upper hand. On a side note, Angelo Trujillo is holding his own when it comes to the successful line of Cleveland quarterbacks of the past.
GAMES TO WATCH THIS WEEK:
Manzano at Clovis: We'll see if the Monarchs can keep their record perfect while on the road against a very improved Clovis squad.
West Mesa at Atrisco Heritage: This could be the game that will determine their district champ.
Los Lunas at St. Pius X: Last year's defending state champ taking on a contender for the 5A title this year.
