The seeding for the state football championships will be released later Saturday night.  The #1 team in class 6A is a no brainer.  The Manzano Monarchs have rolled through their regular season schedule.  Not only is their offense potent, but their defense is just as impressive.  When it comes to seeding in 6A, the top four are pretty locked in.  You can expect La Cueva, Cleveland and Las Cruces to all earn first round byes.

This is also the time of year when I remind people why a Championship Saturday with all the state title games being played in one location over one weekend is a good idea.  It works for basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, track, etc.  What a lot of people don't realize is IF, and that's a big IF, the schools voted to make the move to one location it would likely be at a location like Nusenda Community Stadium, not Dreamstyle Stadium.  Playing the games at UNM would likely be cost prohibitive... and empty.  They could even rotate it from year to year, keep the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces or Bulldog Bowl in Las Cruces in the conversation.  The games could be played over two days (Friday and Saturday). Again, those are just suggestions.  (I will have more on this for a later blog)

But before we decide on a central location, can we please change the "past history" rule to determine home field adantage? It's outdated and doesn't make a lot of sense.  I don't think a game in 1978 should determine if the #1 seed has to go on the road to play a postseason game.  The better seed should have home field advantage.  Period.  (Again, I'll have more on this in a later blog).

(For the record, I've heard a few more coaches warming up to both ideas... but there is a large group of schools/coaches in the south that do not prefer either idea.  It's going to need some convincing...but I'm not giving up).

While we're on he subject of location changes, fans might want to warm up to the idea of moving the state soccer championships to Las Cruces (at least for a year or two).  Playing the games at the complex on the Santa Ana Pueblo is becoming cost prohibitive (and there's no drinking water out there as well).

They are also building up the facility at Nusenda Community Stadium with new baseball and softball fields (soccer fields are on the horizon).  So don't rule out that location for future state championships.

That is all for now.
