ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- New Mexico Voices for Children, a child advocacy non-profit, is urging New Mexicans to complete their Census before the deadline.

"An accurate census count is critical for New Mexico children and families. If we don't get an accurate count this year, we have to wait another ten years," said New Mexico Voices for Children's Research and Policy analyst, Jacob Vigil. "We know that a lot happens, a lot of growth, a lot of demographic changes and that's something that New Mexico families and children cannot afford to miss out on. We can't afford to wait another ten years to get an accurate count."

The non-profit group believes the Census is "our one shot in a decade to get it right for New Mexico Children."

"In New Mexico, a state where child poverty ranks the top of the nation, it's critical that we have an accurate view of how many children are in the state where they are and those kind of statistics," Vigil said.

Officials said an accurate count could help fund resources like medicaid, childhood education and foster care.

"Things like that really support-- and combined with state investments in children and children's health and well-being are just so critical, particularly for a state like New Mexico where large number of families really depend on those programs," Vigil said.

However, Vigil believes a census under count could be a huge loss for the community.

"We would see more children suffering the impacts of poverty, more children suffering from inequitable, substandard education, or not having access to high quality, early childhood experiences," he said.

The deadline to fill out the Census is Sept. 30.
