ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. –  1992 was a busy election year. President George H.W. Bush was seeking a second term, and the aftermath of Operation Desert Storm was wreaking havoc on the economy, especially in New Mexico. Statistics from that year say 6 out of 10 people in Grants, were impoverished.

KOB sent then reporter Conroy Chino to the White House to find out how another term of President Bush might help or hurt our state. President Bush said he was confident in his reelection campaign and he would see a second term, and there was no need for generational change.

By the end of his first term, Bush’s critics pointed to the slumping economy and tax hikes, the antithesis of his campaign promise of “no new taxes”.

As for national defense, President Bush always praised New Mexico’s National labs as a way to bring peace to the world.
