ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Md. – Two students are fighting for their lives this morning following a shooting at a high school in Great Mills, Maryland.

According to the St. Mary's County Sheriff, the two students were shot and have been taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The sheriff says the gunman was confronted and shot by a school resource officer and transported to the hospital.

An alert on the St. Mary's County Public Schools website was posted shortly after shots rang out Tuesday morning at Great Mills High School saying that the event has been "contained."

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office sent out a tweet asking parents to not respond to the campus.

The school is located in Great Mills, Maryland, which is about 60 miles southeast of Washington, D.C.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan tweeted out that he is closely monitoring the situation.
