Advocate talks going red for women’s heart disease awareness

Friday, Feb. 7, is National Go Red for Women Day, raising awareness for how heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. Here is what the New Mexico chapter of the American Heart Association is doing to support women.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Feb. 7 is National Wear Red Day to raise awareness for how heart disease is the leading cause of death for women.

Heart disease kills 1-in-3 women but impacts Native Americans at an even greater rate.

Shayai Lucero is a board member of the New Mexico chapter of the American Heart Association – and a heart attack survivor.

Lucero was 43 years old when she was working one day and began having heart attack symptoms. She said that changed her outlook and inspired her to share her story and inspire other women, especially Native American women, to think about the factors that lead to heart disease.

One of the ways she is doing that is by cultivating heart-healthy takes on traditional recipes.

She shared her story and talked more in the video above.
