Trial to begin for murder suspect who cut off ankle monitor
The suspect was at the center of a citywide search in 2023.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A trial is set to start Monday for a murder suspect accused of cutting off his ankle monitor while out on pretrial release.
Prosecutors accuse Joe Anderson of shooting and killing Raymond Aviles. They said the shooting happened as Aviles was trying to drive away on a motorcycle that Anderson lent him.
While Anderson awaited a trial, a judge released him on an ankle monitor that police said he cut that off. He allegedly hid from officers until they learned he was at an apartment in northeast Albuquerque.
A jury convicted Anderson of voluntary manslaughter in a separate case in 2016.
