ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — White smoke poured out of the Sistine Chapel’s chimney on Thursday, signaling a new pope has been elected.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is from Chicago is now the new pope. He’s taken the name Leo XIV.

In his first words as pope, he offered a message of peace and dialogue without fear. He spoke in Italian and then switched to Spanish, recalling his many years spent as a missionary and then archbishop in Peru.
