Earlier this year, New Mexico Magazine, New Mexico True and KOB 4 asked for True Hero nominations from the public. The goal was to find and recognize ten individuals helping their communities—and our state-- in exceptional ways.
The ten winners, chosen by a panel of judges, came from small and large communities with their expertise-and efforts-covering a wide range --from healthcare to education, the arts, volunteerism, and more. Here are their stories:
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Barbara Kim knew that a good-fitting mask can be the difference between health and sickness, life or death.
She teamed up with her husband, Daniel, to create a sewing kit for the volunteers of The Blue Mask Group.
The group’s other co-founder, Dr. Tom Gormley, collected the donated material from local hospitals.
The group has grown to more than 60 volunteers who have created and donated more than 3,000 masks to hospitals, nursing homes, protective services, and border shelters.
