Earlier this year, New Mexico Magazine, New Mexico True and KOB 4 asked for True Hero nominations from the public.  The goal was to find and recognize ten individuals helping their communities—and our state-- in exceptional ways.

The ten winners, chosen by a panel of judges, came from small and large communities with their expertise-and efforts-covering a wide range --from healthcare to education, the arts, volunteerism, and more.  Here are their stories:

Mrs. Wilma Brooks, the second longest-serving educator in the state of New Mexico, with 50 years of experience in the Hobbs Municipal School system, was named a True Hero.

At the Harold Murphy Alternative Learning Center, attended by many underprivileged and underserved students, Mrs. Brooks tries to foster self-confidence in her students.
