ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Bree Rode has been living a busy life. When she's not taking care of her daughter, she's the girls basketball coach at St Pius and when she's not coaching the Sartans, she's teaching classes at Student Athlete Headquarters in Albuquerque.
After COVID-19 forced her gym to close, Rode wanted to find a way to stay connected with her kids, so she began livestreaming her workouts from home with her daughter Amiyah right beside her.
“We wanted to create an opportunity for our kids to still feel like we were doing something stuff together. Most of our kids, we have 100 families that come in and out of our facility. So for our kids, they were hurt when we had to close the doors, so I just wanted to make sure we stayed connected and active," she said.
Rode said people overseas have even tuned in to her livestreams.
“We've had kids are in Albuquerque. Families from Albuquerque. We have Virginia, Australia, Hawaii there's people all over connected to our SAHQ family. I think that this has turned my brain on to like how can we get online more and be a little bit more professional but it's raw and real and we want them to hear us and feel less and it's like if you grab your two-year-old or your three-year-old or 13-year-old and do it together. More importantly it's just family connecting and we can just throw content out there and people can do it on their own, but I think it's way more personal when you're live in raw and we're dying together," Rode said.
Whether she's coaching basketball or leading a workout, building a positive environment is what Rode is trying to do.
“I think for me, I've been blessed. My mom takes on that role. I've seen that my whole life. My father has taken care of seven kids on one income. I've seen my family reach out to others and support others so it's in my blood, as far as that's what I've seen,” Rode said.
A motto that Rode stands by is you can exercise anywhere at any time. Outside around town, inside your home, and even when you're on vacation.
“I think just movement is great, so for us, I run a Hawaii fitness vacation in Hawaii where we get to hike, do workouts on the beach, travel, explore,” she said.
Rode plans to do more live workouts Monday through Friday at 12:30pm.
