ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- La Cueva's Kaya Ingram is having a player of the year type of season. A few weeks ago she helped the Bears win a metro title. She hopes that is just the beginning of a big senior year.

"Responsibilities have definitely increased as a senior," Ingram said. "I think I've had more of a role as a leader on the team this year and like you said, just more defensive roles."

The Bears have won 14 straight games. As they get ready for district play, Ingram is setting the tone.

"Her shot has been on this year, which is really nice. It's always been tough to keep her away from the basket, she's excellent at penetrating," said La Cueva head coach Robert Perea.

Ingram's teammates also attest to her leadership.

"She is shown like how she's like an all-around player and she can pass, she can shoot, she can drive, she can play defense, she could really do it all," said Jerzie Jones, a sophomore.

"She's an amazing teammate. She always encourages you to do your best," said sophomore Teona Savic. "She'll give you advice, she'll tell you what to do just to help you and also help the team."

Before the season, Ingram committed to play college ball at Cornell.

"I've been to Cornell's camp two years in a row and I loved it. I love the campus, I love the coaches and the players--just the energy, just all around it was definitely a factor for me," Ingram said.

With a 4.5 GPA, Ingram looks forward to the academic challenges of an Ivy League school.

"I definitely take it seriously. Student athlete is big, student always comes first. School always comes first," Ingram said. "I've kind of used basketball as a way to get these higher academic schools interested in me and I think it's just, I'm using basketball as a way, you know, to pave my road."
