ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-  In the last few years, Derick Chavez has become one of the elite guards in New Mexico high school basketball.

Last season, he helped Valley win back-to-back titles for the first time in the program's history.

"A lot of people don't realize how much it takes to win to state championships," he said. "It's not even easy to win one."

For the most part, Chavez has stayed off the court since March

Recently he's gotten back to club basketball-- joining his team D1 New México for tournaments in Phoenix and Denver.

Last week they brought home the tournament title from Colorado

"I think competition in New Mexico is really underrated and that's why when we go to these other states, we have to prove to these other states you know that New Mexico has more in us," Chavez said.

Chavez is the youngest of three boys

After COVID-19 shut down school, he's been spending every extra moment he has with his parents

This summer they've gone camping to one of their favorite spots in New Mexico-- up in Mora.

"We are a real close family, and I think it's gonna be tough to leave them because I can already tell the way they're showing me, 'We don't want you to leave,' you know, 'we don't want you to grow up so fast.'"
