ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Family Promise helps homeless families build themselves better futures. Caseworkers connect parents to work and housing, and churches and synagogues offer temporary shelter in rooms that keep families together.

"They have a safe place to have their family for the week, no shuffling," said Jan Anderson.

Director Laura Combs steers the ship, coordinating volunteers and resources and working with families personally.

“All my life I've believed that no matter what a person goes through or what a person brings with them they deserve to be treated like a human being," she said.

Everyone around her says her passion stands out and changes lives.

"I've known Laura since she came here as a social work intern and she came on the staff and now she's director," Mary Browne said. "She's just grown."

"She's on call, 24/7, yeah, round the clock," added Karen Erickson. "I kid you not, 2am you call her phone and she will answer."

"It's family and family promise first and then herself, and I think a lot of the time she's the last one taking care of herself," Tania Dennis said.

Her coworkers and volunteers turned the tables. A coworker scheduled a "meeting" but took her to the KOB crew. She was surprised and shared why Family Promise means so much to her.

"There are several reasons it’s so important to me," Combs said. "All my life I've wanted to help people... I feel like everybody deserves to have a place to live, everybody deserves to have their basic needs met, so I'm blessed to be able to do this as my job on a daily basis."

Combs shared that Family Promise’s doors are open for people who want help helping themselves.

"I believe my job on this earth, on this planet is to reach people who are facing extreme circumstances, and help them to rebuild their hope in themselves and to empower them to find the strength within them to be all that they can be," Combs said.
