Pay it 4ward: Man helps Belen recover after flood

BELEN, N.M. - Many of our towns and neighborhoods have dealt with damaging and devastating floods this monsoon season.

July 5, 2018, is a day that Tiffany Luna, her family, and the City of Belen will never forget.

"It's never a fun thing when things flood and [it’s] especially not fun when it’s houses, especially a house that you live in and that your family has lived in," Luna said. "I think the most terrifying part was that things were getting ruined, family’s homes."

Several feet of mud, silt, and water swept through Belen that night- and weeks later, cleanup efforts are ongoing.

Tiffany and her family didn't know it at the time, but a fellow Belen resident they had never met, would come to the rescue that horrifying night. She calls the man "Super Mario."

"Every day he drove around Belen and offered to help many people clean up their yards and debris," Luna said. “He was out that night trying to help and days after that, weeks after that, I mean, to me that's impressive."

Luna hopes her fellow neighbors will take notice of “Super Mario’s” actions.

"I think maybe Paying it 4ward to “Mario” will give Valencia County more of a positive note," Luna said.
