ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Governor-elect Michelle Lujan Grisham has a plan to curb gun violence in New Mexico.

“We lose 400 New Mexicans every year to gun violence,” said Victor Reyes, Lujan Grisham’s assistant transition director.

Lujan Grisham wants to treat gun violence as an epidemic. She wants the New Mexico Department of Health to study it as a health crisis.

“It's important to know what the causes are and what we can do as a state to ensure that we don't lose another life to gun violence,” Reyes said.

Lujan Grisham’s action plan includes eight items, from supporting and passing legislation to strengthen background checks to requiring registered firearm owners to report lost or stolen guns.

“We need to make sure that people who shouldn't have guns don't have access to them,” Reyes said. “We're going to make sure we have universal background checks to ensure that firearms do not end up in the hands of those who should not have them.”

However, many Republican believe that system isn’t enforceable. They think the focus should be on socioeconomic issues.

“What we really need in New Mexico is get down to a granulate level,” said Zachary Fort of the Republican Party of New Mexico. “Why do we lead the nation in property crime? Why do we have all this violent crime?”

Fort agrees with Lujan Grisham about the fact that too many New Mexicans die from gun violence.

“I'm certainly not, in any way, opposed to studying how this impacts peoples’ lives,” he said.

Reyes said he’s hopeful that Democrats and Republican can work together to come up with a solution.

“It's going to take a dialogue that's going to happen, a bipartisan dialogue between both chambers of the legislature, bringing together some of these key stakeholders,” he said.
