SANTA FE, N.M. - Longtime State Representative Larry Larranaga passed away overnight at the age of 80.

In August, Larranaga announced that he would end his campaign for re-election and resigned a few weeks later. He served nearly 24 years in the House of Representatives.

Although he was a Republican, Larranaga was known for working with those on both sides of the aisle and was a well-respected lawmaker in New Mexico.

He is survived by his daughter, wife Charletta, son Alan and five grandchildren.

Family Statement:

“Our hearts are broken as we have lost a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Larry was the rock of our family, a proud veteran of the United States Army, and a tireless public servant who fought for a better New Mexico. At home he was a loving husband to Charletta for 51 years and a true family man to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was very proud of his large, faithful and loving family, which included 12 siblings, many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

“His passing was sudden, but we are grateful that there is no more suffering and he can be at peace. While our lives have changed forever, we know this time of mourning will be lifted by the many wonderful memories that we have of him and the wonderful words from the many people whose lives he has touched. While we will always appreciate the contributions he has made to make New Mexico a better place for generations to come, we would love for him to be remembered for his honesty, integrity, generosity and willingness to serve others.

“He will be missed greatly by all who have ever had the honor of knowing him.”

“Larry Larrañaga was the dean of the House Appropriations and Finance Committee. His quiet determination and steadfast approach served as an example for all of his colleagues in the Legislature. He loved New Mexico, and he dedicated his life trying to make it a better place to live. My deepest condolences are with his wife, Charletta, and his family.” - House Republican Leader Nate Gentry (R-Albuquerque)

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Representative Larry Larrañaga. In a time of partisanship across the nation and our state, Representative Larrañaga was always willing to work with lawmakers on both sides the aisle for the greater good of New Mexicans. I had the distinct honor to work with Representative Larrañaga during my time in the New Mexico Legislature. His lasting impact will be felt in New Mexico for generations to come. My heart goes out to his family in this difficult time.” - NM Attorney General Hector Balderas

“Rep. Larry Larrañaga was one of the legislators who believed in a higher calling when it came to politics, often rising above the sometimes petty arguments to truly lead our state. He championed core values of process and fairness and made it his business to understand fiscal policy in New Mexico. Larry taught me a lot and I’m proud to have carried bills with him, and to have stood side by side to bridge partisan divides on some of the toughest issues that faced our state. My heart goes out to his friends, family, and the State of New Mexico. We’ve lost a legislative legend.” - Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller

“At a time of deep national partisan divide, Rep. Larrañaga’s willingness to work across the aisle on critical issues serves as an important reminder that we must seek out ways to collaborate, believe in each other, and take advantage of the opportunities to bring meaningful and positive change to the people and families of New Mexico." - Congresswoman and gubernatorial candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham

“Cynthia and I are deeply saddened by the passing of well-respected New Mexico State Representative, Larry Larranaga, who served in the New Mexico House for 24 years. Larry and I met while having the honor of serving in the State Legislature together on the House Appropriations Committee. He and his wife, Charletta, have been our immediate and good friends ever since. My respect for Larry runs deep—he had a good sense of humor, an infectious laugh, and keen insights; he never lost sight of his principles and was a gentleman in every debate against an opponent. I have no doubt that he will be greatly missed by the rest of the New Mexico Legislature. He will most certainly be missed by me, personally.” - Congressman and gubernatorial candidate Steve Pearce

Larry never sought credit or attention, but his work as a lawmaker, a cabinet secretary, and a small business owner undoubtedly gave New Mexico a brighter future. It was a pleasure and an honor to know Larry on a personal and professional level. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with him over the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Charletta and all of his loved ones as they mourn his passing.” - Republican Party of New Mexico Chairman Ryan Cangiolosi
