ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The candidates in the race for New Mexico congressional district 1 faced off in a debate on KOB 4 Monday night.
Democrat Deb Haaland, Rebpulican Janice Arnold-Jones and Liberaterian Lloyd Princeton were quick to point out what sets them apart.
“Congress has never heard a voice like mine because there has never been a Native American woman in Congress,” Haaland said.
Princeton conveyed the notion of a broken two-party system.
“It's also time to return power to the people, power that has been taken by the Republicans and the Democrats,” Princeton said.
Arnold-Jones touted her rise to success.
“I grabbed that opportunity and became a successful businesswoman with over 30 years private sector experience, including 12 years as a contractor to Sandia National Labs,” she said.
When asked how New Mexico can keep federal funds in New Mexico, Arnold-Jones was quick to call out her Democratic opponent.
“As chair of the Laguna Development Corporation, Deb cost her pueblo $20 million. That money has not been recovered. She also overlooked the theft of over $800 thousand,” Arnold-Jones
Haaland didn't use her time to respond to the allegation.
When the topic of health care came up, Haaland touted the Affordable Care Act.
“I would never vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Right now, many New Mexicans rely on the Affordable Care Act for their health insurance,” Haaland said.
Arnold-Jones and Princeton talked about the importance of cutting the cost of prescription drugs.
“Americans deserve to have competitive drug pricing, competitive with the rest of the world,” Arnold-Jones said. “We should be able to buy insulin available in Mexico for $12 versus what is available here for $100.”
All three candidates made their case to voters. Early voting begins Oct. 20. The general election is Nov. 6.
