ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The New Mexico Republican Party has deleted a tweet that Democratic candidate for governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s campaign is calling sexist.
The tweet, which was sent out immediately following the KOB 4 debate between Lujan Grisham and Republican Steve Pearce, criticized the Democratic congresswoman’s makeup and compared her to Richard Nixon.
It reads, “Hey @jameshallinan did @Michelle4NMM hire Richard Nixon’s makeup artist from the 1960 debate? She looked just like him. Fits great with your campaign message – “I am not a crook!” #nmgovdebate #nmpol
James Hallinan is Michelle Lujan Grisham’s campaign spokesman.
KOB 4 asked her campaign for a response to the tweet. They asked Democratic State Senator Linda Lopez to serve as a surrogate on the issue.
“As a female politician here in the state of New Mexico for over 22 years, the misogyny and the sexism that came out on that text against Michelle Lujan Grisham, who I am supporting, of course, for governor, is disgusting,” Lopez said. “For there to not be any kind of retraction, any way shape or form from the GOP, much less from Mr. Pearce, is wrong.”
KOB 4 asked the New Mexico Republican Party if they would like to add context to the tweet or explain why they sent it.
Ryan Cangiolosi, Republican Party of New Mexico chairman, sent the following statement.
"Michelle Lujan Grisham still hasn't answered the accusations of corruption against her. Her campaign feigned outrage at a tweet about those accusations as way to divert attention from her corrupt delta consulting government contracts.
Now that the tweet is down, they no longer have an excuse to avoid answering questions about her corruption."
