The fast pace keeps everyone on their toes.

Rio Rancho quarterback Isaiah Chavez is leading the Rams 7-on-7 team for the third year in a row.

“It's a good environment to see how the defense plays without pads,” Chavez said.

And while the offense is a crowd favorite, the format lends itself to the defense stealing the show.

“It's good for me at least, as a defensive end because we get our we get to see what kind of schemes the quarterbacks are running, how long they're going to be holding the ball and all that different type a thing," said Sandia’s Joe Barreras.

State runner-up La Cueva is using this time, in hopes of improving on last year’s runner-up finish.

"We got to keep trying to keep the guys focused, let them know that this is a new team this year and we still have something to prove," said La Cueva linebacker Fred Mady III.
