ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Triathlete Carol Akright refuses to slow down.

She competed in the Patriot Triathlon in Rio Rancho over the weekend.

Akright said a health scare motivated her to get active.

“When I was 51, I got breast cancer,” she said. “I thought what can I do that won’t be boring."

Akright tried triathlons. She said it was the perfect blend of exercises she enjoyed.

“New Mexico is the greatest state there is to be outdoors. I love the fact that there are three sports, so there’s swim, bike, run. I don’t get bored doing one thing all the time," Akright said.

In 1999, Akright's breast cancer was caught in the early stages, allowing her to get quick and effective treatment.

From that point on, triathlons became her new passion.

Fifteen years later, she’s competed in 100 events.

"I’m 70 years old. I’d like to be an inspiration for people to know that they can get fit,” she said “I am way past retirement. I’m on my third career and I’m doing a lot and I’m fit and I’m healthy, I never had pain. It’s fabulous."
