ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Club athletes fear the decision to cut four sports programs and phase out diving at UNM could have a trickle-down effect.

A UNM diver says a promising high school diver, whose hopes of diving for UNM are dead.

“Isaac Newman, he's an amazing diver. He has aspirations to go to the Olympics someday. And that's huge. So, it would just be so heartbreaking that this one decision might take that away from him,” said Natasha Dark.

The divers say their coach at UNM also coaches the club diving team, which sends high school divers to compete at the national level.

With the UNM diving coach eventually out of a job at the university, the fate of the club program is up in the air.

High school soccer players also believe the elimination of UNM's men's soccer team will impact players at every level of the sport.

"It's just amazing to me, cause everyone knows that it's just a huge part of the community here," said Nathan Slota.
