ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – In a game started by their third-string quarterback, the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday returned to their typically reliable rushing attack of offenses past to down New Mexico State 42-25 in Las Cruces.

UNM's Ahmari Davis reached the end zone four times while rushing for 74 yards in the latest chapter of the Rio Grande Rivalry. Tyrone Owens breached the century mark for yards on the ground, and added a touchdown of his own for the Lobos.

This is the first time since 2015 that UNM emerged victorious over New Mexico State on the gridiron.

New Mexico State (0-4) built an early lead over the Lobos, leading 17-7 after the first quarter, but UNM's defense clamped down and didn't allow NMSU to reach the end zone again until the final period of play.

By the time Aggie Jason Huntley hauled in a 58-yard touchdown pass from Josh Adkins with 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, it proved to be too late to mount a comeback for NMSU, which trailed 35-17 before the score and ensuing two-point conversion.

Tevaka Tuioti – who had tallied five passing touchdowns and 382 yards through the air through about five quarters of play this season – was out with an injury sustained early in UNM's matchup with Wisconsin last weekend. Backup quarterback Coltin Gerhart, meanwhile, was previously injured in practice, leading to Sheriron Jones getting the start on Saturday.

He finished the game with an interception and 127 yards through the air in the matchup, going 12-for-19.

UNM's defense also stepped up in a big way Saturday. After allowing over 560 yards of offense to each of their first two opponents, New Mexico limited their rivals to 368 total yards en route to victory.

The Lobos (2-1) next face Liberty at Dreamstyle Stadium next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
