ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A handful of former University of New Mexico Lobos have suited up for the Albuquerque Isotopes over the years as they continued their baseball careers.

But this weekend the Triple-A team welcomed its first New Mexico State alum, at the shortstop position—L.J. Hatch.

The 'Topes had an extra roster spot and needed to fill it quickly, so on Saturday Hatch was called up from the Grand Junction Rockies Rookie ball club. It's the latest step in a wild journey for Hatch, who signed with the Rockies organization nearly a year ago after going undrafted.

"They just needed a guy and called on me," he said. "I was lucky enough to get to come here. It's kind of one of those weird things, but I'm glad I get to represent my university here in its home state."

Hatch was unable to reach base as a pinch-hitter of Sunday's game, a 10-4 loss to the visiting Fresno Grizzlies that brought dropped Albuquerque to 49-52.
