The Lobos overcame some defensive miscues and rode a gutsy performance by starting pitcher Justin Slaten to accomplish that mission, beating the visiting UNLV Rebels 8-5.

With the victory, New Mexico moves to 13-22-1 on the season as UNLV drops to 28-13. The two teams will face off again in the second game of the weekend series Saturday at 2 p.m. at Santa Ana Star Field.
