ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— The Lobos are picked to finish third in the Mountain West Conference Men’s Basketball Media Poll.

Last year, the Lobos were picked ninth in the preseason poll.

UNM Head Coach Paul Weir doesn’t want the added expectations to get to the players.

"Being picked third, I don't want that all of a sudden to render these feeling that we are successful or that we have arrived. To be quite frank, we haven't. We have work to do."

Nevada is picked to finish first, followed by last year's conference tournament champion San Diego State.

Boise St. and Fresno St. round out the top five.

Nevada's Caleb Martin was voted preseason Player of the Year and UNM’s Vance Jackson was voted preseason Newcomer of the Year.

Another topic at the media summit was the Lobos style of play. Both players and coaches admitted that tough to duplicate in practice and tougher to play against.

“I think last year when we went to play New Mexico in The Pit, we weren't ready,” said Air Force Head Coach Dave Pilipovich.

The Lobos will show their style to Cal State Northridge first on Nov. 6.
