ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  -- Cherise Beynon scored a game-high 33 points to lead the New Mexico women's basketball team past Saint Mary's 82-80 and into the next round of the Women's NIT.

UNM prevailed despite Saint Mary's outshooting the Lobos 44 percent to 38 percent. The Lobos also withstood a late Gaels' push. Saint Mary's outscored UNM 28-22 in the final quarter.

Beynon came up big, making 10 field goals on 26 attempts and only missing one free throw on nine tries. She also pulled down eight rebounds. Jaisa Nunn had a 16-point, nine-rebound effort for UNM while Tesha Buck added 10 points.

Stella Beck nearly hit the 30-point threshold with 29 points for the Gaels. Three others reached double figures -- Madeline Holland with 14, Megan McKay with 13 and Jasmin Forcadilla with 10.

UNM moves to the tournament's second round to face Rice, who beat Texas State 71-60.

"It'll be great to get in The Pit. We have another great opponent, and we'll take some time off and get prepared," UNM coach Mike Bradbury said. "If we compete at this level, we'll have a chance."
