ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The Rio Bravo Brewing Company is hoping to help the University of New Mexico’s Athletic department by selling their new beer called ‘El Lobo Rojo.’
The cherry wheat brew with a 5.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) took about four months to perfect after the owner, Randy Baker, didn’t want to be outdone by the New Mexico State University’s beer.
The beer is already on tap at Rio Bravo, but the cans will be available soon.
“So we have the turquoise. We have the silver of the can, cherry red and New Mexico mountains. It’s just, we’re trying to make it a true New Mexico product,” said, Co-owner, Denise Baker.
‘El Lobo Rojo’ will be sold at the Dreamstyle Arena and Stadium aka The Pit, with about 12% of the proceeds going to the UNM Athletic Department.
Brad Hutchins, the Deputy Athletic Director for UNM, said every school needs to find different ways to generate revenue and the new beer will help fans enjoy and support UNM sports.
Randy and Denise’s family is full of UNM graduates, so helping out their alma mater is important.
The official unveiling will be on November 12th at a tasting at Rio Bravo.
The selling price and division of the proceeds among the different sports haven’t been decided.
