UNM place-kicker contemplated giving up football

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Eldorado High School graduate Andrew Shelley was one of the best stories for the Lobo Football team last year.

He started the season as a walk on and ended up earning a scholarship after becoming the starting place-kicker.

Shelley said there were struggles along the way and he considered giving up football at one point.

However, he said his family helped put things into perspective.

“The moment that really changed it was, you know, I talked to my parents, I talked to my grandparents and they all said that that they were happy that I could be here and that, obviously, their opinion of me wouldn't change if I didn't want to do it but I did ultimately,” Shelley said.

The place-kicker said it was ultimately his love of the game that kept him on the field.

“I couldn't get myself to stop playing, [I] love coming out here, love being with the teammates, talking to teammates, I love kicking,” Shelley said.
