UNM splits two-game series with Grand Canyon

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A five-run second inning helped propel the New Mexico baseball team to a 10-4 victory over Grand Canyon, avenging a loss from the day before.

Second baseman Justin Watari led the Lobos at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort and three RBIs. Three other players – left fielder Phillip Sikes, center fielder Brayden Merritt and shortstop Nick Atkins – each went 2-for-4.

Grand Canyon cut the margin to 5-3 in the third inning, but UNM remained up with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and another two more in the sixth. The amassed 12 hits to Grand Canyon's six.

Robert Gasser got the pitching win, improving to 2-2 on the year.

UNM lost to Grand Canyon 7-3 on Tuesday.

The Lobos (15-24-1, 8-13 MW) returns to conference play this Friday opening a three-game series with San Jose State.
