ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Bernalillo County deputy shot and killed a suspect in the North Valley Friday evening.

In a news conference, Bernalillo County Sheriff Manny Gonzales said deputies responded to a crash on Edith near Montaño. A suspect had fled the scene – then deputies found the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a fence near Edith and Nikanda. Deputies reportedly attempted to contact the driver. Gonzales said a man got out of the vehicle with what appeared to be a rifle or "some type of weapon."

According to BCSO, a deputy fired at least one round, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken to the hospital by the Bernalillo County Fire Department. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"We don’t know how many deputies were involved in the shooting at this time," Gonzales said. "We’re in the preliminary stages of this investigation. We’re still collecting evidence to include the body footage and we still need to interview the deputies."

According to BCSO, multiple weapons were reportedly recovered from inside and outside of the suspect’s vehicle. No deputies were injured.

Edith will be closed between Montaño and Comanche as the investigation continues.
