Carlsbad Public Library collecting for digital time capsule

CARLSBAD, N.M.- A public library is working to preserve the unique time people are living through right now.

The Carlsbad Public Library launched a new project for a digital time capsule about the pandemic.

The daily COVID updates from the mayor gave Sarah Jones, the library director, the idea.

“I asked him if it was OK if I preserve his daily updates, and he said ‘yes,’ so it kind of became like we wanted to preserve how the city handled it but also the public,” she said about starting the project.

This new digital time capsule aims to show the pandemic from a first-person point of view, something librarian Terry Busby said is crucial to understanding what exactly happened.

“Historical context is very key people were still finding out about the last pandemic, new things that they weren’t taught or didn’t know," he said.

Now they’re asking for the public’s submissions that will be included in the online archive to preserve hopefully forever.

“There’s not even a limit on how many one person can submit we just want you to submit what you think is your best example of how you spent the pandemic and that it’s also age appropriate,” said Jones.

Things like poems photos, videos or music will be accepted.

“If you’re a musician and you’re sitting at home writing new music and recording it you can submit that,” she said.
