Crews extinguish fire outside PNM switchyard

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue worked 7 hours to extinguish a large fire outside a PNM switchyard Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said the fire was near Northern and Encino Road in Sandoval County, about seven miles west of the Santa Ana Star Center.

Power poles and other PNM equipment were burning. PNM de-energized the equipment so first responders could begin putting out the fire.

There are also no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Fire crews will be monitoring the area for any hotspots overnight.

PNM is reporting several outages around the metro, but officials said this is not related to the fire. It’s likely due to high winds.
