Volcano Vista’s Ja’Kwon Hill named New Mexico Boys Basketball Player of the Year

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The New Mexico Activities Association announced Volcano Vista High School’s Ja’Kwon Hill has been named Gatorade New Mexico Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the 2021-22 school year.

Hill is the first Volcano Vista player to be chosen for the award, given in recognition of outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and demonstrating exemplary character at all times.

Hill, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior guard, led the Hawks to a 29-0 record and the 5A state championship while averaging 18.1 points, six rebounds and five assists per game. Among his stats are shooting 83% at the free-throw line.

He scored 17 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in the Hawks’ 66-55 overtime win against Las Cruces in the state championship final.

Hill also maintained a 4.01 GPA in the classroom. He is still undecided on what college he will go to.
