APD: Suspect shot, officer injured in International District shooting Sunday update

Albuquerque police say a suspect and officer were injured in a shooting in the International District Saturday night.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque police say a suspect and officer were injured in a shooting in the International District Saturday night.

In a social media post, APD Chief Harold Medina said around 8:20 p.m. a license plate reader alerted police of a stolen 2014 Acura at Pennsylvania and Central.

When officers made contact with the vehicle at Pennsylvania and Central, the suspect shot APD Officer Zachary Garris.

“At this point in time, some type of altercation occurred with the driver of the stolen vehicle and officers. We’ve had one officer shot in the hand, both hands actually,” said Medina.

Medina says the officer and the suspect are in the hospital. They identified the suspect as Santiago Perez.

In an update, police say Garris is expected to be released from the hospital Sunday after undergoing surgery.

“Our officers put themselves in harm’s way because they care about the community they serve,” Medina said in a press release. “Officer Garris didn’t hesitate to do his job. We are grateful Officer Garris will recover from his injuries and we are prepared to support him during his recovery.”
